Lottery Luck in 2009
The National Lottery in Britain recently celebrated a 15 year anniversary and the weekly game is going as strong now as when it first started. Since the first ever draw on November 19 1994, more than 2000 players have become millionaires.
According to the operator of the National Lottery in Britain, one in every 23,500 adults in the United Kingdom is now a millionaire jackpot winner and more than four million individuals win prizes each week on the lottery’s wide range of draw-based games and scratch cards.
You might be a regular lottery player or perhaps you try your luck every now and again, but regardless of how often you play, you may be interested to know that some numbers appear to be luckier than others when it comes to playing the lottery.
The number that has been drawn the most times over the past 15 years since the lottery started out is ball number 38. Ball number 38 has been drawn a total of 256 times; 209 as the main ball and 47 times as the bonus ball.
To increase your chances of a winning combination, the second luckiest ball number is 25. So far, the number 25 has been drawn a total of 235 times: 196 times as the main ball and 39 times as the bonus ball.
Other numbers which have appeared more often than others are 31, 23 and 9 which have been drawn a total of 235, 234 and 228 times respectively.
If you want to be in with a chance to win it might help to know the unlucky numbers as well so you can steer clear of them. Anyone with superstitious tendencies will not be surprised to know that the number 13 is in fact the unluckiest.
Since the national lottery was launched in 1994, the number 13 has been drawn only 146 times which is eight times fewer than any other number. The unlucky number 13 failed to appear at all in 49 consecutive draws between July and December 1997.
The number 13 is considered unlucky in several different cultures with one of the deepest rooted associations resting with Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, as he was the 13th person to sit at the table during the Last Supper.
Despite the unlucky connotations, statistics show that the number 13 has turned out to be lucky for some. Around 13 new millionaires were created each month within the first 13 years of the lottery’s operation.
A 13 strong syndicate of taxi drivers from Littlehampton have won two major prizes to date; a £546,480 share of a lotto jackpot in February 2008 and £144,222 from matching five main numbers and the bonus ball in 2002.
Whether you deem the number 13 unlucky or not there is solid proof that this is the least drawn number in the national lottery. Other unlucky numbers include 6, 9 and 11.
