Paper Or Plastic Poker Cards?

If you’re just starting out playing poker, one of the first things you’ll need to buy are a few decks of cards. Not all decks are created equal, though, and there are a few things to learn about the kinds of cards before you shuffle up and deal. Paper or plastic poker cards? This is your most important decision when choosing a deck of cards. Using plastic poker cards is a good and relatively inexpensive way to start. Not only do plastic playing cards enhance the playing experience, they are actually more cost effective than using regular paper playing cards!

While paper cards do an adequate job, they are easily soiled by dirty fingers, can be creased or bent, and last for only a night or two. Plastic cards, on the other hand, are much more durable, are easily cleaned, retain their shape better, and are harder to mark or crease. There are actually three different kinds of materials playing cards are made of: plastic, vinyl, and paper. Plastic cards are the most durable, highest quality cards and are used in almost all casinos. Vinyl cards are a good, slightly cheaper choice, though they will bend and won’t last as long as the 100% plastic cards. Paper is the cheapest and least durable – the corners will fold, and you’ll have to get new ones often. But in a pinch, paper cards are better than none.

However, Paper cards are infamous for not holding their shape – whether from a thousand shuffles (they start to “bow” upwards) or from players lifting up a corner to read their hole cards. Plastic poker cards, in comparison, are easier to bend (not as stiff as paper cards) and maintain their flatness better. Also, Plastic cards stay cleaner, are easier to shuffle and have a better snap back to them.

If your home game is like mine, then there will be the often drink spilled incident during the course of the night. Unfortunately, paper cards must be discarded after they get wet. On the other hand, a quick wipe of a towel and the plastic cards are good as new. Even without any spilled drinks, plastic cards can be returned to their sealed box glory with some cold water and a damp sponge. Imagine playing every game with clean and shiny cards.

For convenience sake, paper playing cards can’t be beat. Need a deck? Just run to the nearest supermarket or your local Walgreens for a deck. But if you want a cards that will last 2-3 years of weekly use, then you’re looking for a quality deck of plastic poker cards.

In a recent poll at a Worldwide Poker Community, 59% of people who play poker at home use plastic poker cards.

Understanding Poker Player Types

More than the starting hands that you are dealt with in a poker game, there are other factors that you need to consider when playing poker. If you remember my article with quotes from famous poker players, you will remember one that described poker as being a card game played with people – or something to that effect.

This cannot be overemphasized.

More than the cards that you hold, you need to know your opponents in order to be a successful poker player. As in most other things, you can classify – albeit loosely – poker players into different categories. Before you go on reading, it is important to bear in mind that this is just a general classification and in reality, you cannot box any person into a single type. There are always gray areas between the classifications and many people would fall under these.

The term “loose” is often associated with inexperienced players. If you are a loose player, then you will play out more hands than necessary. This means playing out even some of the worst starting hands that we discussed in the last post. This attitude can be attributed mainly to lack of experience. If you have decent enough cards, you can take advantage of the loose players at the table and win.

On the other hand, a “tight” player waits for the best starting hand possible. As opposed to the loose player, he folds more often than not. If you know that your opponent is a tight player, you can bluff more often and lure him in. However, if a normally tight player doesn’t fold, he is probably holding something really good.

Then there is the “aggressive” player. This category has two sub-categories, the first of which would be the aggressive loose player. More than just playing out each and every hand that comes his way, the aggressive loose player would even raise the bet – even if he doesn’t have very good cards. He is usually quite the talkative one around the table. The aggressive tight player is somewhere in between the loose and tight player. He may fold several times until he gets the cards he wants – and then he plays like a loose player. He would then bet and raise without a care in the world. Confidence marked in this type of player. Bluffing an aggressive loose tight player is quite a difficult task as he usually knows what he wants.

As mentioned earlier, in real life, classifying people into clear cut groups don’t really work. Personalities vary and so do actions. What is important is that you know the general types of players and then observe your opponents carefully to learn their personal brand of playing. Then you can adjust your own style of play to suit them. You should also be ready to change tactics in mid-play, depending on how your opponents make their moves. Flexibility is the key. Do not fall into the trap of branding people as such and such a player and then boxing him in. That mistake can very well cost you your game!

Tips for Playing Better Poker

Poker has been gaining such popularity lately that many people are looking for the secrets of the pros to help them play a better game. Countless books and shows and web pages have been created to help people play better poker.

Whether you are playing at the casino or in a regular weekly game, you want to know the techniques that will make your game that much better.

There is one secret of the pros that is important for every poker player to know. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing Texas hold em’ on a televised celebrity match, or seven card stud in the casino, or five card draw with a bunch of buddies at your house. This is one of the main secrets that pros use:

? “Play tight.”

The term “playing tight” means that you should fold bad hands quickly and aggressively play good hands. If you have a bad hand, get out early. Don’t try to wait it out and hope that the cards will turn your way. They rarely do. However, if you have a good hand, stay in and bet high. Your high bets will drive out the weaker players and still raise the pot to make up for the small losses that chipped away at your pile of cash through the evening. In fact, a good player may only play a couple hands in an entire evening, but if they play tight they can still win.

So what is a good hand and what are other ways to help you play tight poker? It depends on the game you’re playing. Here are some suggestions, although these are just guidelines and not everyone will agree.

? If you are playing Texas Hold ‘em, stay in if you are dealt a good black jack hand on your two down. If not, get out.

? If you are playing five card stud, stay in if you are dealt a pair. You may want to stay in if you are dealt an Ace, but you’re taking a risk. Otherwise, get out.

? No matter how tempting it is, don’t hold out for a straight! If you’re trying to build a straight, fold because the chances are slim.

? If you are playing draw poker, keep the required amount plus a “kicker” card, which will throw off your opponents as to what you have. And you’ll be surprised at how often that kicker will help you win the pot.

? Don’t bluff. If you are great at bluffing, you may want to do it occasionally, but most people are terrible at it. What’s more, in many friendly games, people will pay to see if you’re bluffing because the stakes are low, so if you gain a reputation for never bluffing you will also gain a reputation for going big only when you have a good hand.
